Geography and Importance

The Río Grande (Spanish for "Big River") is a major river in North America, known as Río Bravo del Norte in Mexico. It forms the border between the United States and Mexico for 1,254 miles (2,018 km).

With a length of approximately 1,885 miles (3,034 km), the Río Grande is the fifth-longest river in North America and the 20th-longest in the world.

Origins and Flow

The Río Grande originates in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and flows through New Mexico and Texas in the United States, before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. Along its course, it provides water to numerous communities, supports diverse wildlife, and irrigates millions of acres of farmland.

Significance to Border Communities

The Río Grande serves as a vital resource for border communities on both sides of the US-Mexico border. It provides drinking water, irrigation, and recreational opportunities. However, it also presents challenges related to water allocation, flood control, and environmental degradation.
