Mumbai Rains: Heavy Downpour Leads to Chaos, NDRF Deployed
Paralyzed Transportation: Local Trains, Roads, and Air Traffic Severely Affected
A torrential downpour in Mumbai on Sunday resulted in widespread chaos and disruption throughout the city, leaving residents stranded and emergency services overwhelmed.
The sudden onset of heavy rain, accompanied by high tides, caused severe waterlogging in several areas of Mumbai, including Matunga East, disrupting public life and leaving many parts of the city inaccessible. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Mumbai received a staggering 10% of its annual rainfall in just six hours, resulting in widespread flooding.
The Western Railway and Central Railway, which operate local trains in Mumbai, were forced to suspend services due to the severe waterlogging, leaving hundreds of thousands of commuters stranded and creating traffic chaos. Roads across the city were also badly affected, with many vehicles submerged and traffic brought to a standstill. Airports in Mumbai, including the city's main international airport, were partially closed due to the torrential rain.
In response to the worsening situation, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was deployed to assist in rescue and relief operations. Rescue teams were dispatched to flooded areas to evacuate residents and provide assistance to those in need. The city authorities also implemented safety measures and urged residents to stay indoors to avoid any further incidents.
The heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next few days, with the IMD issuing a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas. Residents have been advised to follow safety precautions and monitor weather updates closely.
